Visit with tasting in a third-generation winery

Situated in the land that gave its name to the POD Primitivo di Manduria, there is a third-generation winery that will host you and tell you the story of this fine Apulian wine.
Even before Primitivo was recognised as a wine product of protected designation of origin in 1974, the winery was already bottling pure Primitivo in the late 1960s.
The guided tour includes the following activities:

  • visit to the small farming museum
  • visit to the production area
  • visit to the barrique cellar
  • guided tasting.

The museum

It is set in the ancient wine vases located in the basement of the cellar. (non ho capito molto bene questa frase in italiano. L’ho tradotta letteralmente. Per favore, se non va bene, spiegami cosa intendevi e la rivedo/correggo) These large vases were made of concrete and were used for the fermentation of wines during the 1970s.
They have recently been renovated and connected, thus creating an open environment that houses the small museum. This is where ancient tools of the farming civilisation have been collected, through which it is possible to learn about the evolution of winemaking techniques and much more! These tools also tell stories of the territory and of other ancient professions, such as the carpenter or the shoemaker.
These objects represent evidence of a not too remote past, glimpses of daily life in those days that alternated between hard work in the fields and family life.
Some cisterns, on the other hand, house the history of the winery’s production: from the bottles of Primitivo dating back to 1970, to the first ones after the approval of the procedural guidelines in 1975, thus proving its presence in the history of the PDO since its origins.

Primitivo di Manduria

It is a red grape variety whose name comes from its early ripening. The harvest of Primitivo di Manduria, in fact, begins towards the end of August and ends in early September. The bunch is sparse, with olive-shaped grapes that are very sweet and have a thin peel.
Its origins are uncertain, but, according to some documents, it is to be found in the territory of Gioia del Colle. It would later also be cultivated in Manduria, thus becoming the city’s symbolic vine variety.
Primitivo grapes have a high sugar content, which makes it possible to obtain wines with a good alcohol level. Some vineyards, in certain favourable climatic and environmental conditions, can produce wines with an alcohol content of up to 17-18 degrees.
The wines also have an excellent wine-ageing ability.
