Cycling in Puglia, immersed in the nature of the Valle d’Itria , is a very suggestive experience. Riding in the evening guided by the full moon is even more. Having the chance to contemplate a partial eclipse of the moon is also an almost unique event! We were lucky tonight and we can tell you our wonderful experience, our moonlit bike excursion in Puglia.
The bike ride started in Figazzano, a small district located between the Cisternino countryside. We cycled for about 15 km on the Cyclepath of the Apulian Aqueduct. The cycle route follows the main canal of the aqueduct and is considered one of the most important tourist cycling routes in Italy. Along the way the guides told us the story of the Apulian aqueduct. It can be considered a real “hidden river of Puglia”.
They then delighted our eyes making us admire the landscape that surrounded us. Fields, vineyards, olive groves and Mediterranean vegetation characteristic of Valle D’Itria illuminated by moonlight. We also crossed the aqueduct canal bridges built in the early 1900s and bordered by the famous dry stone walls. Around us the typical trulli of Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino and Ostuni.
This walk was not just a typical but also an exotic experience. We have indeed visited the Ashram Bhole Baba, a unique spiritual oasis. Full of oriental atmospheres, hosts all those who want to devote themselves to prayer, meditation and common work. The oasis is full of sacred sounds and symbols of Indian deities, including a curious Hindu temple surrounded by cypress trees.
The bike ride made us really hungry. The guides, knowing this, let us stop in the building of Figazzano. At the house of Figazzano we ate a very good apricot tart and fresh fruit. Grapes and pears harvested just a few hours before the walk!
Tonight our eyes and our palate have enjoyed the beauty and goodness offered by our land.
